Plymouth Outlaws D4 sweep Wellington on the road

Plymouth Outlaws D4 returned from Wellington with two wins on Sunday, beating the Khaki Sox 14-9 and 18-8 in their Division 4 double header.

It was the second meeting between the clubs this season, after the sides split the honours in Plymouth earlier in the year. The rain held off, the games were played in good spirits, and the return fixture made for an enjoyable afternoon of baseball.

On the field, it was a big day for the Outlaws offence, with 32 runs and 35 hits across the two games. The running game played just as big a part, with the team stealing 44 bases across the double header and turning singles, walks and defensive mistakes into runs.

Wellington caused problems of their own and kept finding ways on base, but the Outlaws had enough firepower and base-running pressure to come away with the sweep.

Game one took a couple of innings to get going. Wellington started well, scoring three in the first and one in the second while holding the Outlaws scoreless.

The response came in the third. Herrera opened the inning with a hit before Brennan brought him in with a single. Parsons followed with another hit, Platten singled, Ball drove in a run, and D. Samarakoon added an RBI single as the Outlaws put up five runs to take a 5-4 lead.

From there, the Outlaws kept the pressure on. I. Samarakoon reached in the fourth before Herrera drove him in, with Staniforth later coming through with two RBIs to stretch the lead. In the fifth, D. Samarakoon, Herrera, MacDonald, Brennan, Parsons and Platten all helped build another five-run inning.

The running game was a big part of that pressure. Herrera stole six bases in game one, Parsons stole five, and Brennan added three as the Outlaws kept forcing Wellington to make plays.

Wellington fought back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Outlaws had done enough to take the opener 14-9.

Brennan took the win on the mound and helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, three RBIs and three stolen bases. Herrera went 3-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and six steals, while Parsons added three hits, two RBIs and five stolen bases.

Game two followed a similar pattern once the Outlaws got moving.

Wellington scored once in the first, but the Outlaws answered with five in the second. Platten and Herrera both singled, Ball drove in the first run, D. Samarakoon added an RBI single, Clarke brought in another, MacDonald singled in D. Samarakoon, and Parsons worked a bases-loaded walk.

After Wellington pulled two back, the Outlaws added two more in the third before taking control in the fourth. Parsons and Platten opened with hits, Herrera drove in a run, Ball kept the inning moving, and D. Samarakoon produced the swing of the day with a three-run home run to deep centre field.

Parsons also produced one of the best base-running moments of the day, going from first to home in one play after a Wellington pickoff attempt gave the Outlaws a chance to capitalise.

Wellington responded with three in the bottom of the fourth, but the Outlaws came straight back with five more in the fifth. Clarke walked, MacDonald singled him in, Back and Brennan both walked, Parsons drew another walk to force in a run, Herrera singled in two more, and Ball added another RBI.

D. Samarakoon scored again in the sixth, with Clarke driving him in for the Outlaws’ final run of the day.

Herrera went the distance on the mound, throwing six innings and striking out five to complete the 18-8 win.

D. Samarakoon was the standout in game two, going 4-for-4 with a home run, four runs, four RBIs and four stolen bases. Herrera backed up his pitching performance with three hits, two runs and three RBIs, while Platten also went 3-for-4 and scored three times.

MacDonald added three hits, two RBIs and five stolen bases, Clarke drove in three and stole four, and Parsons reached base three times with two RBIs and four steals.

Across the day, the Outlaws kept finding ways to score. Herrera finished with six hits and seven stolen bases, while D. Samarakoon went 6-for-7 with a home run, five RBIs, five runs and six steals.

Two games, two wins, 35 hits and 44 stolen bases made it a strong road trip for the Plymouth Outlaws D4 squad.
