Match Report: Torrington Riptides 17–5 Plymouth Outlaws
For the second consecutive Sunday, Plymouth Outlaws were on the road, making the trip to Great Torrington to take on the Riptides in a BBF Division 5 clash.
The Outlaws made a bright start, taking the lead in the first inning. Nathan Joy singled before Josh Harvey drove him home with a double to left-centre. Torrington responded immediately with two runs before pulling away with five-run innings in the third and fourth to seize control of the contest.
Plymouth continued to battle and threatened to close the gap in the fourth. Stuart Kellie and Simon Pritchard both singled before Jake Plumley brought home the first run of the inning. Bobby Trotman followed with an RBI single to make it 12-5, but the Outlaws were unable to build on the rally.
The Riptides added five more runs in the fifth through a combination of timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. Edward Willmott and Jess Cooper both drove in three runs for the hosts, while John Lewis also finished with three RBIs. There were positives for the Outlaws at the plate, with Simon Pritchard going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Josh Harvey and Nathan Joy both collected two hits as Plymouth finished with 12 hits overall.
Joy also struck out 10 batters across four innings, but Torrington's offence proved too strong as the Outlaws fell to a 17-5 defeat.
Match Report Game 2: Torrington Riptides 13-28 Plymouth Outlaws
After falling short in the opening game, Plymouth Outlaws bounced back in emphatic fashion, producing a relentless offensive display to defeat Torrington Riptides 28-13 and earn a split of the day's double-header.
Nathan Joy worked a leadoff walk before James Pollard, Stuart Kellie and Simon Pritchard all drove in runs as Plymouth raced into a 4-0 lead. Torrington responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run home run from Edward Willmott, but the Outlaws kept the pressure on.
Plymouth added another run in the third before pulling away with five runs in the fourth, with Nathan Joy delivering a two-run single and Erin Owens also driving in a run.
The game was put beyond doubt with an incredible fifth inning. Plymouth sent 22 batters to the plate and scored 18 runs, taking advantage of patient hitting, timely base knocks and a series of walks. Josh Harvey's three-run double was the biggest hit of the inning, while Simon Pritchard added a two-run single and Nathan Joy finished the rally with another RBI knock.
Joy led the Outlaws with five RBIs, Harvey drove in four, while Pritchard also collected four RBIs as part of a three-hit performance. James Pollard crossed the plate four times, and the Outlaws showed tremendous discipline at the plate, drawing 28 walks to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Rupert Morris produced a gutsy performance on the mound to record the first complete game of his career. Despite facing a Torrington lineup that collected 17 hits, Morris stayed composed, worked through constant pressure and battled into the final inning to secure a well-deserved first pitching win.
